This is definitely something that you would want to be discussing with a doctor of physical therapist if possible.

I don't know your particular case, but the neurological symptoms are not good.

You may have tight muscles here and there as well as a lot of scar tissue that may need working on in physical therapy to help fix up some of the dysfunctions that you are currently experiencing.

Hi Steve,

Thank you for such a great article. I have a bit of a different situation. I broke my neck and multiple bones throughout my back 1 year ago in a car accident. After almost a year of recovery- I am experiencing a serious amount of cracking, "crushing sounds", snaps, pops, everything in both shoulders. I still have a good amount of neck and back pain, but I am not sure why my shoulders are cracking so often. It is literally any time I extend either arm for a stretch it will crack and from there it will crack after the most minor movements. I have a sense of tingling and pain that goes down my arms. Any idea what I should do? Feeling a bit miserable :(

Thank you so much.

That's true I did not address ligamentous laxity which can be a factor. Good catch. When I get some time I'll put that into this article to make it more complete.

Feel free to shoot me an e-mail at steve @ this site's name.

You mentioned joint laxity as due to sports injury. Since July 2011 I have encountered one significantly affected joint after another; Rt. shoulder; Lft Hip, affecting left leg and knee; now Lft shoulder but am unemployed and our state health plan does not allow for the suggested physical therapy. My search began with "What is going on?" (most people even my age are able to use their limbs), childhood memory of a general vague lack of coordination (then considered clumsiness) and "Why now?" have caused me to conclude possible genetic ligamentous laxity (multiple joints and increasing) which you did not address in your article. My questions in the face of no medical assistance and a strong desire to reclaim my body has led me to try to exercise the affected areas after determining they were no breaks in the joints, no osteoperosis, only mild arthritis...terrific unexplained pain, Your article did affirm that this could be my solution, for which I am grateful. If you have suggestions my email is provided and I would appreciate the guidance, thanks

Hmmm, may not be a bad idea to get a second opinion if nothing is helping.

Yes. Once a week for 18 months along with individual home therapy. We have done everything from heat, tens, traction, stretching, and core strenthing I have herniations of my lumbar disks L3-L5. Primarily on the left side according to my MRI. I have had two steroid shots in the back with little relief. My orthopedic doc dose not think this numbness has anything to do wityh my disk. I think it does.
I am currently on multiple Meds. To block the pain receptors to the brain. That has helped some took my pain from a 10 to a 5. However, the numbness persist. I am supposed to get a shot in the hip to see it has anything to do with a labrum tear or to rule it out. Thank you for listening.

It sounds like you're having some issues with your gluteals, sciatic nerve, and possibly SI joint. Wouldn't rule out some piriformis either.

Have you seen a physical therapist?

Hi Steve,
I have snapping or popping in my left hip for three years most of the times without pain. However, My left hip hurts when I sit (groin) for too long including numbness of the left leg all the way to the toes. When I walk for a prolong period pain resume along with me limping. My left gets weak and feels like I am dragging that foot. Xray show normal hip. Any suggestions?

Might want to get that checked by a physical therapist if you can then. It could be a lot of things since a lot of muscles are moving during pronation.
