Rigor mortis is caused by depletion of ATP. ATP binding to the Myosin/Actin chains is required to "relax" the muscles. Once the body dies, the muscles stop producing ATP. Once that ATP is used up, the muscles are unable to relax and will seize up causing rigor mortis.

As you can see in the top of ~10 o'clock to 2'oclock part of this photo ATP is required to release the contraction of the muscle:

I apologize this was just a quick search photo. If you want to see a better one you can look for muscle contractions. They will show you that ATP is required to release muscles from contractions.

This is why you can also get cramps when you are heavily exerting yourself because of depletion of ATP stores.

Hi

If lactic acid does not cause cramps, why does it in rigor mortis wich is somewhat similar to anaerobic-glycolysis. The person dies, stops breathing, lactic acid builds up and causes cramps/rigor mortis.
